Peer Pressure September 4, 2008

I was looking through books yesterday at the shops and saw all the Twilight books, which I know basically nothing about. What I do know is that I’m beginning to feel like I’m the *only* person who knows nothing about them.
Despite being almost broke and trying to save money, I almost bought the expensive book (Australian book prices are often completely nutty) just because I felt the need to be ‘up’ on what everyone else was reading.
Have you ever felt pressured to read something because ‘everyone else’ was reading it? Have you ever given in and read the book(s) in question or do you resist? If you are a reviewer, etc, do you feel it’s your duty to keep up on current trends?

So, I am not the only one not reading the Twilight books? I usually pick books based on authors I am familiar with or reviews that I have read. I don't usually read something because everyone else is, it has to appeal to me. Although I did join an online book club and have read some books that I would never have choosen myself and really enjoyed them.

If you’re anything like me, one of your favorite reasons to read is for the story. Not for the character development and interaction. Not because of the descriptive, emotive powers of the writer. Not because of deep, literary meaning hidden beneath layers of metaphor. (Even though those are all good things.) No … it’s because you want to know what happens next?
Or, um, is it just me?

I am totally with you! I loose sleep simply because I need to know what is going to happen next!

Libraries
What is your earliest memory of a library? Who took you? Do you have you any funny/odd memories of the library? I can remember going to the library when we lived in Pennsylvania (We moved to Florida when I was 8). We lived in a really small town so my mom would take us to the library in the town where my aunt lived in East Palestine, Ohio. Now my aunt works at that same library.

Other Worlds
Are there any particular worlds in books where you’d like to live? I don't read books that take place in other worlds. I enjoy books that could actually happen.
Or where you certainly would NOT want to live? Ditto question one.
What about authors? If you were a character, who would you trust to write your life? My life? - I would need an author who could embellish it is bit as my life is pretty laid back.

Beginnings July 24, 2008

What are your favourite first sentences from books? Is there a book that you liked specially because of its first sentence? Or a book, perhaps that you didn’t like but still remember simply because of the first line?

I think most reader are familiar with the first line "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." To be honest, I can't remember any first lines of books that stayed with me. Title catch me more than first lines. I just finished a book with the title Don't Make Me Choose Between Me and My Shoes by Dixie Cash. Tell me that's not a catchy title?

Vacation Spots July 17, 2008

Do you buy books while on vacation/holiday? Since I am frugal about my books (I buy cheap, go to the library or swap) unless I have run out of reading material while on vacation I don't usually purchase books. I do, however, purchase magazines that I don't normally read while on vacation.
Do you have favorite bookstores that you only get to visit while away on a trip? Yes.
What/Where are they? When I go to visit my best bud Wendy in Tucson, AZ we always go to Bookman's. It is a huge, used bookstore that is set up like a regular bookstore. They sell magazines, books, CD's and DVD's for half of the price on the item. You can take your used media there and get credits. I wish we had a Bookman's in SW Florida.

One of my favorite bookstores burned down last weekend, and while I only got to visit there while I was on vacation, it made me stop and think.
What would you do if, all of a sudden, your favorite source of books was unavailable?
Whether it’s a local book shop, your town library, or an internet shop … what would you do if, suddenly, they were out of business? Devastatingly, and with no warning? Where would you go for books instead? What would you do? If it was a local business you would try to help out the owners? Would you just calmly start buying from some other store? Visit the library in the next town instead? Would it be devastating? Or just a blip in your reading habit?

WOW, it made my heart flutter when I read about a book store burning down. It makes me so sad to think of all those books destroyed. As far as where I would go to get books - I have so many places that I get books that I would just go to another place. I have book store, eBay, Goodwill, the library (and we have three libraries with 10 miles of my house), swap with friends and family and one of my favorites:

So, although I would be very sad to see any of my favorite book stores or libraries close I would find another place very quickly. And, will all the books I have at home I could probably read for a year without leaving home!

Holidays July 3, 2008

It’s a holiday weekend here in the U.S., so let’s keep today’s question simple–What are you reading? Anything special? Any particularly juicy summer reading? Nothing particularly juicy but I realized a week or so ago that I hadn't read all of Janet Evanovich's older books so I picked up a hardback that has her first three Stephanie Plum novels, One for the Money, Two for the Dough, and Three to Get Deadly. I am about 3/4 of the way through One for the Money. Fun, easy reading.
